Rock Race Gibraltar 1999

It is a tradition in the Royal Navy that when ships and submarines visit Gibraltar, a race is organised starting from Admiralty House (sea level !) and finishing at the top of the rock at 1,800 ft.

My first run up the rock was in 1987 onboard HMS Charybdis.  It was during this race that Chris Roberson broke the record ( 13 min 50s ) while serving as an Officer of the Watch.  The record still stands today. (History does not show the time I ran it !)

In 1998, we has just completed a very busy deployment to the Black Sea in HMS London and Gibraltar was our penultimate port of call before returning to the UK for X-mas Leave.   Normally, the race is on foot, but this time I decided to cycle it all the way to the top on my trusty Specialised Stumpy  in a very respectable 18 min 32 s. . . . .  . .  . . and no, it hadn't been raining !
